Granite is a much harder substance than marble. Because granite is composed primarily of feldspar, quartz, and mica, compressed over millions of years, it is a hard and more dense substance than Marble. Marble is a sedimentary stone formed from sediments under the sea bed. It is softer and more porous, therefore it will scratch and stain easier than granite.
Yes you can cut on granite, but it will dull your good knife every time. We recommend using a cutting board.
We use 3cm (1 ¼”) granite (granite thickness can very from slab to slab), we prefer to use this thickness so we do not have to build up the front edge of the granite like they do with ¾” x ¾” material. This way we do not have a visible line on the finished edges, and it also allows us to source larger slabs in some cases. We are also able to imbed rebar underneath, in front and back of most sink holes to make that area 1600 percent stronger.
Yes you can put hot pots and frying pans on granite, however, we recommend the use of a trivet to assure your countertops lasting beauty.
Your granite may have a seam, it all depends on several things. Such as, is the slab big enough to suite your project. Will we be able to get the slab in your house without damaging your property or our staff. Will we be able to put the slab standing up on end of your cabinets without touching the ceiling of your kitchen. These are questions our template technician will be able to answer for you when he is out to template your project. The seam may be visible depending on your choice of of granite. Because granite is a natural stone, the colours, patterns and veins will vary from one end of the slab to the other. The seam will show more with a linear (vein) type granite. When we do your seam, when ever possible, we use a tool called gorilla clamps. With this system we are able to do tighter seams. We also use colour epoxy to help camouflage and bond the seam.
Because most granites have a certain amount of porosity, it requires a certain amount of maintenance. When we deliver your granite to you we have already given it two additional coats of sealer in addition to what the slab company has put on. With your normal maintenance you should be protected from any stains that may develop.
For everyday cleaning, use a few drops of a mild liquid antibacterial dishwashing detergent or stone soap. Always avoid cleaners with abrasives, ammonia, acid or other harsh chemicals (Windex, Ajax and Vinegar) as they will surely scratch or etch granite and marble. Wipe acidic spills immediately like red wine, lemon juice, tomato based sauces always-clean and olive oil or oil based products from the surface. Wipe off excess water on the surface as it may create water damage.
Granite will not chip or crack with normal use, but any excess force may cause chips or cracks to form. However most of these can be repaired and not leave a visible mark.
Yes for sure. Because granite is a natural stone and is cut from different parts of the mountain, it most likely will be different from your sample. That is why we insist that you come and view the slabs that we brought in for you prior to starting your project.
Yes there can be pits and fissures in granite. It is a natural stone, it also adds natural beauty and character to each individual piece.
